retreat on their property adjacent to the Tijuca National Park where they could enjoy books, art and especially the natural landscape.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">The<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">primary<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">design goal was to make the house as small as possible<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">within<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">its tropical jungle setting.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">The 1,500-square-foot house rises into the rainforest canopy &#8211; a secluded hideaway for the owner couple to retreat from<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Essentially a steel-and-glass box, the house hovers above the land supported structurally by two concrete piers, one of which<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">also functions as<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">an indoor\/outdoor<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">fireplace.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Tucked into the<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"spellingerror\">ju\u00e7ara<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">palm and<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"spellingerror\">cariniana<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">trees on the 3.1-acre site, the north end of the home contains a single bedroom while the south end opens to views of city,<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">the<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">sea,<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">and Rio\u2019s famous Christ the Redeemer statue.<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">On the ground plane below<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">,<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">a screened porch and outdoor kitchenette allow the owners to engage the landscape.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Local construction techniques are incorporated throughout, including board-formed concrete site walls and interior walls of colorful plaster over terracotta in the Brazilian tradition. Floors are Brazilian wood and<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"spellingerror\">vermelh\u00e3o<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"normaltextrun\">stained concrete, a common vernacular tradition. Painted, marine-grade stainless structural steel &#8211; the home\u2019s primary material &#8211; stands up to the humid climate where corrosion is a concern. The home is designed for natural ventilation with manual pivot windows and retractable window walls with insect screens.
