For Maskin, this was one of the best qualities of the original house\u00a0\u2013\u00a0throughout construction,\u00a0he had a \u201cwhat comes down must go up\u201d policy for\u00a0the original wood panels. Each panel taken down\u00a0for\u00a0an alteration was repurposed in the new additions, becoming\u00a0cabinets, new ceilings and storage areas.\u00a0Throughout the design, Maskin worked to make\u00a0the different construction periods legible. Modern additions are demarcated with different wood types from the original planks, making it clear to see what was \u201cthen\u201d and what is \u201cnow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arketipomagazine.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2020\/11\/image009.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-35868604\" src=\"https:\/\/www.arketipomagazine.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2020\/11\/image009.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1192\" height=\"549\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.tecnichenuove.it\/arketipomagazine\/2020\/11\/image009.jpg 1192w, https:\/\/static.tecnichenuove.it\/arketipomagazine\/2020\/11\/image009-300x138.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.tecnichenuove.it\/arketipomagazine\/2020\/11\/image009-1024x472.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/static.tecnichenuove.it\/arketipomagazine\/2020\/11\/image009-768x354.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.tecnichenuove.it\/arketipomagazine\/2020\/11\/image009-696x321.jpg 696w, https:\/\/static.tecnichenuove.it\/arketipomagazine\/2020\/11\/image009-1068x492.jpg 1068w, https:\/\/static.tecnichenuove.it\/arketipomagazine\/2020\/11\/image009-912x420.jpg 912w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1192px) 100vw, 1192px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Even though the house needed a large amount of work, for Maskin it was a dream project. He\u00a0removed the low ceiling in the living room and turned the former attic space into a cathedral ceiling\u00a017\u00a0feet tall at the gable.\u00a0New\u00a0foundations\u00a0were\u00a0added\u00a0where none existed previously, and seismic upgrades were made. Maskin\u00a0essentially added a second story to the house \u2013 a new stairway with orange plexiglass risers leads to a large bedroom. Here, floor-to-ceiling glass windows\u00a0give expansive views of the water and Agate Pass. A small second floor terrace was added atop the original screened-in porch, which Maskin converted to a dining room and office. These rooms have views of two gardens that Maskin designed, including one with hardy plants inspired by visits to tropical areas.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arketipomagazine.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2020\/11\/image010.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-35868605\" src=\"https:\/\/www.arketipomagazine.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2020\/11\/image010.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1185\" height=\"685\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.tecnichenuove.it\/arketipomagazine\/2020\/11\/image010.jpg 1185w, https:\/\/static.tecnichenuove.it\/arketipomagazine\/2020\/11\/image010-300x173.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.tecnichenuove.it\/arketipomagazine\/2020\/11\/image010-1024x592.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/static.tecnichenuove.it\/arketipomagazine\/2020\/11\/image010-768x444.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.tecnichenuove.it\/arketipomagazine\/2020\/11\/image010-696x402.jpg 696w, https:\/\/static.tecnichenuove.it\/arketipomagazine\/2020\/11\/image010-1068x617.jpg 1068w, https:\/\/static.tecnichenuove.it\/arketipomagazine\/2020\/11\/image010-727x420.jpg 727w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1185px) 100vw, 1185px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Maskin also\u00a0designed most of the built-in furniture and cabinets.
