Evelyn Grace Academy – Zaha Hadid Architects

Un singolo corpo di fabbrica si sviluppa come un ponte su una pista di atletica dal vivace colore rosso. Una forma sinuosa, unica e aperta, trasparente e riconoscibile che, innestandosi sull'asse centrale, sospeso, ricuce il tessuto urbano circostante. La Evelyn Grace Academy, che si trova a Brixton nello storico quartiere di Lambeth a sud di Londra, è l'edificio che ha permesso allo studio di Zaha Hadid di vincere, per il secondo anno consecutivo, il premio Stirling. Si tratta di un complesso costituito da quattro scuole, dotate ciascuna di una propria identità, che condividono servizi e aree comuni. È un complesso che incarna il principio di origine americana di "scuole all'interno delle scuole", che prevede piccoli istituti indipendenti all'interno di un unico edificio. La scuola, costruita quasi interamente con fondi non pubblici, è una Academy, ovvero una struttura pubblica che, rispetto alla scuole tradizionali, gode di una maggiore indipendenza nelle scelte educative e riceve aiuti anche da sponsor privati. La Evelyn Grace, in particolare, fa parte delle otto Academy della Fondazione ARK (Absolute Return for Kids), istituita da vari fondi di investimento che, in accordo col sistema pubblico, crea nuove scuole che vogliono offrire opportunità eccezionali ai bambini provenienti da contesti disagiati. Si tratta, infatti, di edifici costruiti in zone urbane difficili che cercano di innalzare la qualità del servizio formativo offerto. La richiesta prevedeva un edificio scolastico per 1.200 studenti, divisi in due scuole medie e due scuole superiori da non più di 330 studenti l'una, da realizzare in un lotto che era circa quattro volte più piccolo della dimensione ritenuta usualmente ideale per tali capienze, in cui dovevano trovare spazio anche diversi campi da gioco e la pista d'atletica (Evelyn Grace è specializzata, oltre che in matematica e scienze, nelle attività sportive). Dopo aver studiato l'ipotesi, preferita dagli urbanisti locali, di realizzare la scuola sul perimetro del lotto riprendendo le dimensioni e l'organizzazione delle piccole abitazioni tradizionali presenti sul sito, Zaha Hadid ha preferito compattare l'edificio organizzandolo come un singolo corpo di fabbrica. Un gesto unico e aperto, contraddistinto da trasparenza e riconoscibilità, che mira a "ricucire" il tessuto urbano discordante in cui si trova, attraverso una forma sinuosa che si inserisce, piegandosi, tra le due arterie stradali che caratterizzano il sito. Esso si innesta su un asse centrale costituito da una pista di atletica di 100 m color rosso vivo che viene letteralmente scavalcata, a ponte, dalla Academy. Un edificio la cui massa apparente è ridotta, grazie a un "podio", che nasconde le strutture comuni (rese accessibili alla comunità locale al di fuori dell'orario scolastico), su cui l'edificio "decolla" facendolo apparire come se avesse solo tre piani, isolando la scuola dalla strada e facendola apparire più snella e meno alta. I quattro diversi istituti sono chiaramente leggibili nell'articolazione scultorea della facciata: un puzzle dinamico in cui le scuole superiori sono adagiate sulle medie e il tutto è connesso, al centro, da spazi comuni vetrati. Ciascuna di esse ha la sua identità con presidenza, ingresso, locali insegnanti e terrazza distinti. La Evelyn Grace Academy è un progetto che, a fronte di un involucro ad alte prestazioni, presenta all'interno spazi pratici e sobri,realizzati anche con materiali spartani. È bello immaginare che Zaha Hadid Architects, abituati agli spazi del loro studio, nel quartiere di Clerkenwell, in una delle ex scuole vittoriane progettata da Edward Robson, con aule ricche di luce e ventilazione naturale, realizzate con materiali durevoli e cura dei dettagli, abbiano voluto dare pari qualità alla scuola di Brixton.

One single volume which develops like a bridge over an athletic track with a bright red colour. A winding shape, unique and open, transparent and recognisable which, arranged over a central axis, brings back together the surrounding urban territory.  The Evelyn Grace Academy is a building in Brixton, in southern borough of Lambeth, which allowed Zaha Hadid's practice to win for the second consecutive year the Sterling price. It is a complex composed of four schools each with its own identity which share services and communal areas. It is a project that embraces the typical American principle of "schools within schools" which sees small independent institutes inside one single building. The school, almost entirely built with private funds, is an Academy, which is a public structure which, in contrast with traditional schools, is more independent in the educational programmes and can benefi t from private sponsors. The Evelyn Grace in particular, is part of the eight academies belonging to the Ark Foundation (Absolute Return for Kids) which was created by several investment funds which, in agreement with public institutions, have built new schools to offer exceptional opportunities to children coming from deprived backgrounds. These are infact structures built in the problematic districts and they try to upgrade the quality of the educational system offered there. The brief required a school for 1,200 students, divided in two junior and two senior schools with no more than 330 students each; it had to be built on a site which was four times smaller than the size typically considered ideal for such student population in which to include also several playing fi elds and an athletic track (the Evelyn Grace academy is specialised not only in math and science but also in sports activities). After having studied the option preferred by the local planners to build the school on the perimeter of the site to repeat the dimensions and the lay out of the small traditional house of the area, Zaha Hadid preferred to design a compact building concentrating it like a single volume. One open and single message which is distinguished by transparency and identity and which aims at sewing back together the disjoint urban network; this is possible via a winding shape which bends and insinuates between the two main roads that characterise the site. The building is arranged over a central axis represented by the 100 m bright red athletic track which is literally overcrossed by the Academy like a bridge. A building, whose apparent mass is reduced thanks to a podium, which hides the communal structures (accessible to the local community outside school hours), on top of which the building "takes off" making it appear as if it had only three fl oors and separating the school from the street and making it look more slender and less tall. The four different institutes are clearly identifi ed from the sculptural articulation of the facade: a dynamic jigsaw in which the senior schools rest over the junior school and everything is connected at the centre via glazed communal spaces. Each of these have their own identity with the headmaster's offi ce, entrance, teachers' rooms and independent terraces. The Evelyn Grace Academy is a project which, in contrast with a high performance envelop, presents internal spaces which are practical and sober and made with very basic materials. It is nice to imagine that Zaha Hadid Architects, used to work in the spaces of their studio in Clerkenwell in one of the Victorian schools designed by Edward Robson with classrooms full of light and natural ventilation and made with durable materials and attention to details, wanted to create the same quality for this school in Brixton.
