Energy Centre – John McAslan & Partners

L'Energy Centre, ubicato presso l'ingresso ovest del Parco Olimpico, fornisce un quarto dell'energia elettrica e tutta l'acqua calda consumate nel Parco. È stato concepito per essere un punto di riferimento per la comunità locale, seguendo l'antica tradizione londinese delle grandi centrali, di cui Battersea e la stessa Tate Modern sono un esempio. Il design del Centro risponde con forza al contesto in cui sorge, trovandosi non lontano sia dal centro di Stratford che dai quartieri est del sito olimpico. L'architettura, caratterizzata da una estetica industriale tipica da XXI secolo, si sviluppa in un volume rivestito da pannelli di acciaio corten perforati e una canna fumaria schermata alta 45 m. Parte dell'involucro è vetrato per permettere ai passanti di apprezzare gli interni. Fulcro del centro energetico sono le moderne caldaie a biomassa. La modularità e flessibilità dell'edificio ne rendono possibile l'estensione per soddisfare la futura domanda energetica del nuovo quartiere, che verrà ultimato dopo i Giochi.

The Energy Centre is at the west entrance of Olympic Park; it provides one quarter of the Park's energy needs and all of its hot water. The plant was designed to become a community landmark, following in the footsteps of the ancient London tradition of great power stations. The Centre's design is powerfully infl uenced by the surrounding context of nearby downtown Stratford and the neighbourhoods to the east of the Olympic site. The architecture features a typical 21st century industrial aesthetic with the building volume clad in perforated corten steel panels and a 45 m tall smoke stack. Part of the exterior envelope is glazed to allow passersby to appreciate the interior; the heart of the Energy Centre are the modern biomass boilers. The modularity and fl exibility of the building means it can be expanded to accommodate the future energy demands of the new neighbourhood that will be developed here after the Games.
