Placemaking,letteralmente "fare posti", architettonicamente "creare luoghi".
Di regola i progettisti hanno un debole per la percezione dello spirito dei luoghi dove devono esercitare la loro arte (uso questo termine per staccare da quell’approccio commerciale che non distingue la Cina da Minnesota), il famoso Genius loci.
A quelle spesso indistinte sensazioni si aggiungono potenti, positivi significati e valori che trasformano consapevolmente un sito in un luogo. L’architetto diventa produttore culturale ogni qualvolta questo processo porta alla creazione di uno spazio dove attributi simbolici e esistenziali coincidono, ma l’operazione riesce ancora meglio se conferisce a quello spazio un potenziale tutto da giocarsi nell’utilizzo futuro. Per questo si dice che gli spazi pubblici devono si essere progettati ma non troppo.
Il placemaking agisce aggiungendo valori intangibili, ma di estrema importanza per la comunità che li utilizza in cross-culturalità, agli spazi fisici.
E’ un modo positivo di guardare al futuro dei nuovi luoghi e dare rinnovate valenze a quelli vecchi, che trovano nella storia la definizione del loro significato, dove quello che è successo è spesso drammatico, dagli avvenimenti occorsi allo stato di mantenzione.

At a recent conference on The Art of Placemaking at NLA, London, the air was thick with talk of "branding" and "curating" real estate and "programming" opportunities in the built environment for people to socialise.
The event was timely, since the making of successful places is a key objective of recent reforms to the planning system in the UK and key feature in an high-profile review in to the future of the High Street, or Main Street.
The National Planning Policy Framework emphasises establishing a strong sense of place to create thriving local economies.
